Diary Post #5: Editing

Editing has begun and so far it has gone great. Firstly I extracted all footage from the camera and uploaded it onto iMovie. Then footage from extra filming was cut or deleted as it wasn't needed anymore this was because of sound issues and camera shaking. We then started to cut and crop the footage to all fit together we also detached audio and re put it in to other points of the film that it matched, this was very technical. This is only day one so alot more footage and technical changes are needed.

Diary Post #4

Today was all about filming! Here you can see me and my co-producer/ director Emma adjusting the camera to get that perfect shot. Due to some camera issues previously alot was shot on this day however nothing was rushed and accurate footage was produced. It was great fun working with my friends and more ideas were flowing throughout filming about how we could make it even better!

Diary Post #3

Unfourtunatley our filming schedule didn't go to plan due to a few technical camera issues so a later date was set. Planning has been going great and ideas have been flowing. A new location has been added and we will be filming at our friends house who will also feature in our trailer. The house is great location as it has a very festive feel and props have been set up to make it look even more festive.

Institution Research

For a successful film you must ensure thought and research goes into choosing a distributors and producers therefore at this stage I have started my research, my film is independent, British and Christmas themed so I have researched those specific things.

Love Actually Poster Love actually was my first idea as it has many British actors and is Christmas themed! The distributors of this film were Universal a very large world renown company immediately you know the film will be successful as nearly all Universal films gain success. This is also produced and distributed by Studio Canal and independent British company.

Bridget Jones's Diary Poster
Another British setting film would be Bridget Jones' Diary the productions companies were:  very similar to Love actually, even though Studio Canal is independent it's success is very wide across the World.

Therefore my trailer I think that the best Production company would be Studio Canal as it is independent and British (with american branches) and my distributor will be Universal as it produced many successful film by its distribution and is for all audiences instead of a specific genre especially family films which I want to create.

Storyboard Update

So me and my co-worker Emma have been really thinking into our narrative for our trailer alothough this is not yet finished out ideas are all there and we are in the process of creating out storyboard to ensure filming is successful and follows the correct narrative without going off task. Above shows the beginning of the storyboard with description of what is exactly going, the edit, shot type and duration. Alot more is to go but the pace is good and still yet to add colour at then end. A very fun task!

Location Research

There will be many locations featured in my film trailer as I intend to present a montage of shots and moving images on different Christmas locations that my audience will recognise, its unclear to me what order my shots will go in until I begin filming and editing my film to see what looks best.

My first location for my film will be the Harrods store in London. This is great location for the montage of images as at Christmas time the store it lite up and the surrounding area is extremely busy as everyone is Christmas shopping.

Another location would be Winter Wonderland also in London, another fantastic location as its only there for the Christmas period so fits great with our genre.

My third location will be a Santa's Grotto, I intend to film this at Wood cote nurseries as they have a spectacular display of Santa's grotto with reindeer's!

A very chirstmassy location would be a church as Christmas is all about Christianity so we intend, with permission to film Christmas carollers there is also an alternative Church in Cheam Village were the choir from my school will be singing Carols.

Carnaby Street during the Christmas period would be perfect location for our film, its full of life and decorations, a great clip for our montage of footage.

Actors and Characters

Here are my four actresses that will be featuring in my film, like any chick flick there are many personalities which are described about and in my conventions of chick flick post. I have included the names of my new cast and the characters names they will be performing as. Each has a strong personality but in a different way however the main character is Lindsay played by Alice Whyman as she is the one who causes the dilemma in the film and without her there would be no story line.

Notes
Additional details
Location
Winter Wonderland – Hyde Park

For this location to be effective in our trailer has to be filmed in the evening as the atmosphere will be more lively.
Date Required

2/12/2016
This is once the event it open to the public
Do you need permission to record/photograph in this location?
Who will you need to contact?
No, no permission is needed as it is a public event with no entry fee or tickets needed. There will be many filming and pictures there as it is a tourist attraction and very popular.
N/A
Will the levels of noise cause a problem?
If so, how will you overcome this?
The noise levels will be high as it is a very popular attraction however we are intending to put our own music over the top as these scenes are a part of the montage of Christmas clips.
kdkjnkN/A
Is the level of lighting suitable?
The level of lighting will be fine for this footage as it needs to be dark atmosphere. Lighting will occur with rides and Christmas lights which will be the main focus.
To prevent the footage being unsuitable and not for use a light will accompany my crew to ensure different takes can be done with different lighting.
If inside, are the Emergency exits clearly visible and available?
Is Emergency equipment provided?
Yes throughout the park there are various fire exits allocated around the site due to the large capacity of people that are there, there is more than one – so in the event of a fire, the fire exits will be clearly evident.
My crew and I will not be taking fire equipment with us however as this is a large event there will be health and safety people there that will have equipment in the event of an emergency.
Is there public transport easily available to you?
Yes the train and tubes take me and my crew directly with a small fee.

Deck the Halls (2006) Theatrical Trailer Analysis

As the theme of my movie is a Christmas theme I had to research and watch trailers for that type and genre, the one I looked at here and analysed was Deck the halls, as by the title a film packed with Christmas themes and with a family narrative.

Similar what I intend to do with my film, the beginning starts with a variety of shots with Christmas themes to them for example and ice rink, a snowy hill etc. This is a perfect example of what I want to include in my film to create a Christmas buzz and the audience immediately recognise the theme of my film like 'Deck the Halls'.

These example represent great winter activities that everyone as an audience can relate to therefore putting them at the beginning with no intentional hints about the narratives gives the audience a feel for the film.

We then get introduced to the protagonist with a classic voice over labelled as 'Mr Christmas' suggest a loving, caring, family man, this follows with a montage of short jump cut clips of him to give the audience a slight idea on his personality. Again showing Christmas theme for example choosing a Christmas tree. Using quick cuts suggests his passion and enthusiasm about Christmas and how he works very hard to make it 'perfect' as 'Mr Christmas'. Happy, mellow music is played throughout behind the voice over.

We then get a change in the music to a more rocky sound when its all about to change for 'Mr Christmas'. A new neighbour has arrived so using the POV shot allows the audience to understand that the protagonist is weary of this change and reveals the narrative story line slightly, revealing there will be conflict between him and the new neighbour.

This is the neighbour whom we also have a montage of clips as he moves in revealing parts of his character for example he has a wife and two daughters. He is also presented as being very competetive

Audience Research

For me and my co-worker Emma audience research we used survey monkey this allowed to ask a wide range of people questions that had multiple answers getting very accurate and detailed answers. I wish to post these questions also on social media to get my peers feedback in the near future.

The first question included is great to find out how many people would actually be watching out trailer and if they are effective, there is a divide between very likely and likely therefore it is essential for a trailer to be promoted before a film is introduced to the cinema and this will be for audience to have some idea of the films narrative giving them a chance to decide if they want to see the film.

This was a great question to identify how much the audience really want to know, do they like to know the whole plot or just snip picks of it...the answer is a lot of the narrative. Therefore I have a definite answer that this is the best route to go down and to produce a theatrical trailer instead of a teaser.

Due to the fact that many Christmas films include voice overs as they are traditional I included this question. From the results I am not ruling out totally a voice over as not many people agreed compared to disagree however I want to appeal to audiences so more research on this will be needed.

From my last question I wanted to get an understanding of what doesn't work therefore knowing what to avoid in creating my trailer especially if it stops audiences going to watch the film. Surprisingly more people said No to this question which reveals people do give second chances to films and want to see for themselves. However some people did challenge this so to avoid this we must ensure we do everything that makes a trailer successful and research those that have been unsuccessful and their reasons.

I intend to do more audience research such as on Facebook or on Twitter to get my peers advice and a wider audiences also through the share button. This isn't enough audience research so far to know exactly what to include and exclude therefore I am looking forward to finding some more!

Diary Post #2: GarageBand

Today we got to learn how to use Garage Band on the iMacs which will be a great help when creating our background music for my trailer. As the tutorial progressed it became easier to understand the elements of Garage Band and how to infuse sounds and loops that will work well together. As my genre is a Christmas film I will have to import copy-right free music to link with my genre then add sounds from garage band to create the perfect song for my trailer.
